A proper toilet! Sutu Wale, The Gambia

A proper toilet! Sutu Wale, The Gambia

Apologies in advance for continuing on the toilet humour tip (sorry, its Brit thing) so if you are at all squeamish (or easily offended for that matter), then skip this next entry! Oh, and don’t look at the image to closely either!.

As mentioned before, all of the compounds we stay in have outside ‘bathroom and WC facilites (often together on the same small piece of ground) – i.e. a hole in the ground, sometimes covered, often not. Going to the loo in the dark can turn into quite an expedition in itself. The rule of thumb is not to shine your torch down the hole, don’t put your torch anywhere near that hole, don’t even look at the hole – s**t (being the operative word!) – too late!! Indelibly imprinted on (in?) your memory is a dark writhing mass of crawling and flying creatures, moving over human waste!

Take my word for it, its not something you want to see, especially when you are just about to sit around a family dish of Mbala – rice, and chopped us dried fish that looks uncannily like bugs!!

Sometimes, it really does pay to ‘go bush’ – i.e. take the tassalo (the Gambian equivalent of a bidet – a small plastic kettle), filled with clean water, your soap in hand and find a secluded spot in the bush!

Sorry, but I did warn you to miss this bit if you are squeamish!

More (toilet) humour to come from the Short Walk Team – no doubt!! xx
